Lot 1943

1888-S $20 Liberty. ICG graded MS-64. When you catalogue coins for auctions, and have done so for many years, you tend to look at a certified coin first, then notice the number grade. With this one, the cataloguer thought, "A nice 63, maybe better." All because of the concentration of obverse marks and especially a big one on Liberty's nostril. But the color is real pleasing--greenish gold with iridescent hues. Yes, gold does indeed tone. Sometimes that toning is simulated, as we've suggested often in our cataloguing, but this time it looks just as it should.
