Lot 1889

Perfection - A Superb 1913 Matte Proof $5 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 67. Here is a magnificent example of the fine sandblast finish which was used to produce Proof Half Eagles during 1912-13. The surfaces are virtually perfect today, without signs of contact, toning or age. The grade awarded by PCGS has only been earned by 3 coins; there are none graded higher of this date, or any date for that matter, of Indian Half Eagles. That makes this coin tied for the finest graded of the type. Someday this coin will probably be encased in a Proof 68 holder. Philadelphia coiners popped off 99 of these, a low total for Proof production in 1913. Of these, perhaps 40 survive in various undamaged Proof grades, with this coin tied for the very finest. An outstanding opportunity to own something precious and flawless.
