Gorgeous 1889 Proof $5 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 64. Here's one of the really low-pop Proof half eagles, and in lovely condition. Moderate contrast only, but overall (especially out of harsh light) a good black-and-white appearance. Twirl this around to enjoy the orange-peel surfaces and look for problems. You won't find much you won't like, just some faint hairlines. Of the 45 struck (one of the lowest mintages of the era) only 9 have been graded, this one tied with 2 others as the best. Maybe those numbers include resubs? Whatever, the numbers are minuscule and the coin itself is nice and Choice. These seem so elegant when preserved as lovingly as this specimen has been.
