Lot 964

1878 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a fully struck example of this moderately tough date. The surfaces are free of any distracting marks and it had a beautiful satiny luster. There is a reverse die break, known as a retained cud, where the die has broken and slips farther into the die chamber than the rest of the die face. The planchet metal fills the void. As a variety it is exciting and to the right buyer worthy of a premium. To the average collector it is interesting, but maybe not worth a premium. It is a Mint-made anomaly so it does not detract at all from the grade and desirability.

This is the beginning of "The Gilded Age" collection 1878-1909, taken from Mark Twain's 1873 novel of the same name. The Indian Cents of this era are more uniform and struck in higher quantities. Planchets were supplied from outside the Mint starting this year and quality improved there too. Pop 45; 13 finer; 12 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2132) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
Ex : The "Chiro" Collection. Eagle Eye Photo Seal accompanies this lot.
