Lot 85

1787 Immunis Columbia. . Breen-1137. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Uniform frosty dark chocolate brown. Struck very slightly off center to the bottom leaving the lower third of the date off the planchet, but two-thirds of a date is more than usually seen and examples with a complete date are extremely rare. That's because the planchets used for these (possible) prototype federal designs were slightly undersize for the dies. There are a few small, shallow contact marks on the lower half of the obverse and a dull rim nick at the top of the first U in UNUM. Sharply struck with crisp details on both sides. A premium example of this rare post-colonial (confederation) issue. NGC population 1 with only 4 finer.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 15,000.
Ex Auction '83, Superior 7/29/83:1505.
