Lot 292

1797 Draped Bust Cent. . S-135, R3+. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown Reverse of 1797. Very attractive lustrous steel brown with faded mint red covering 15% of both sides. The surfaces are smooth, satiny, and virtually flawless offering outstanding eye appeal. The only defects, and they are trivial, are a dull nick or planchet chip in the dentils left of the L in LIBERTY, a small spot of darker olive toning at the dentils over the N in UNITED, and an even smaller one over the right top of the N in ONE. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state II. Most likely from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state 1796 and 1797 cents obtained directly from the US Mint in December 1797 by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. This group of about 1000 cents was passed down to the family heirs until its dispersal in the 1860's. EAC grade MS63. Pop 3; 2 in 66 BN.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 18,000.
Ex Dr. Hesselgesser.
