Lot 272

1795 Liberty Cap Cent. Plain edge. . S-78, R1. Fine-15 Clipped Heavyweight Planchet. Sharpness near VF30 but covered with microscopic roughness under a glossy dark olive brown patina. There are patches of light corrosion and verdigris on both sides as well, strongest at LIB and left of the top of the cap. Fine hairline scratches on the upper half of the obverse round out the notable defects. Nicely struck E-MDS. The date and legends are complete and strong. A curved planchet clip affects the dentils right of the face and over ER in AMERICA. The planchet is thicker than normal for plain edge 1795 varieties, and it weighs 182.1 grains (in spite of the planchet clip) versus the plain edge standard of 168 grains.
Estimated Value $500 - 1,000.
