Lot 271

1795 Liberty Cap Cent. Plain edge. . S-78, R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown with traces of faded mint color showing on the obverse and at least 20% of the slightly faded mint red remaining on the reverse. Choice except for some of the usual tiny planchet chips at the forehead and top of the cap, plus some more at the N in UNITED. Otherwise this piece is nicely struck and flawless. Intermediate die state, Breen state IV, with minor swelling in the obverse fields and delicate die clashmarks on the reverse. Excellent eye appeal. EAC grade MS62 and certainly one of the finest known. The Pittman/Hesselgesser provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 12; 5 in 64, 3 in 65.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 8,000.
Ex Henry Chapman 11/1915-unknown-New Netherlands Coin Co. 4/1960:1368-John J. Pittman, David Akers Numismatics 10/97:167-Dr. Hesselgesser.
