Lot 2406

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Coin is encased in PCGS holder 50122008. Well struck. Lustrous and untoned. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Better struck than the 1872-CC and 1873-CC eagles, the present near-Mint survivor is sharply defined with no areas of bothersome lack of detail. There is little in the way of light highpoint rub, and the number of scattered abrasions is on a par with what one might expect for a CC-mint gold coin of this size that saw a little circulation. An attractive, still partially lustrous survivor of this conditionally challenging, frontier-era delivery. Previously housed in a PCGS holder with the same grade, this coin tied for second finest-known honors among 1874-CC Eagles certified at NGC. NGC Census: only 2; with a lone MS-65 example finer. PCGS reports a single AU-58 and just one Mint State coin (MS-63) graded higher.

The 1874-CC is definitely a front-page issue in this important Liberty $10 gold series -- a fact that might stem from its status as a standard-bearer for the Carson City Mint from the 1870s. While there were certainly more Eagles struck in Carson City in 1874 than during the previous three years combined, the 1874-CC was a heavily circulated issue that can be very difficult to locate in high grades. Even a small hoard of 20-30 pieces that entered the market in the mid-1990s was comprised chiefly of coins that grade only Very Fine or Extremely Fine. Possibly as few as 10 to 12 About Uncirculated pieces are known. In high grades, the '74-CC is rarer than all of the Carson City Mint eagles delivered during the 1880s and 1890s. Pop 1; 1 better in 63. (PCGS # 8670) .
Estimated Value $27,000 - 30,000.
