Lot 1672

1880-CC, GSA Hoard. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty white gem certified in the GSA black holder. The lustrous coin has flashy luster and a clean cheek on Liberty. The strike is strong for the date, with just a touch of softness at the hair above the ear and on the eagle's breast. The reason for the popularity of the 1880-CC is that, unlike many CC-mint dates from the period, it did not emerge in large quantity from the Government Services Administration (GSA) hoard, dispersed in the 1970s. Demand for high quality examples is enormous, and the few frosty Gem pieces are especially desired, commanding a nice premium, since the frosty devices and flashy fields provide the greatest eye appeal.
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.

Realized $1,150
