Lot 1076

1852 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Mostly lightly toned and an agreeable state of preservation for this heavily circulated denomination. Lustrous throughout. Pop 150; 86 finer; 73 in 66; 11 in 67; 12 in 68. (PCGS # 3666) .

Proposed in a coinage law of 1851 was a silver 3 cent piece. It was to have the weight, proportionate to its 3 cent value, of 12 1/8 grains, but the proportion of pure silver was to be only 3/4 instead of 9/10. And it was to be a subsidiary coin, with a legal tender limit of 20 cents. The mint was to coin the pieces from its own bullion and sell them to the public, but only in exchange for foreign fractional silver coins, then still the predominant circulating medium.
Estimated Value $600 - 650.

Realized $978
