Lot 908

Large Sectional Ivory Group of a Fisherman and His Son. Japan, Meiji Period. A choice genre study of a cormorant fisherman. The man holds up the latest catch, while two of his trained birds are at his shoulder and his foot. A boy is happily shouldering a burden. The figures' clothes and elements of the scene are richly textured with incise work, and dark toned. The fine craftsmanship of the work and sympathy to the subject is very much akin to the works of Gyokuyuki. Height: 21-1/2".
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,300.
Irving Goodman, Personal Collection.
