Handel Lamp Presented By J.P. Morgan to French Chef Henri Charpentier, c. 1900. Leaded glass and bronze apple-blossom lamp, unsigned. Domed shade of yellow-centered, pink blossoms and multi-green leafage. The tree-trunk form is bronze standard, flaring to a base with exposed roots. The height of the base is 27 inches; the diameter of the shade is 24 inches. Fine except for the plug, which needs replacing. This lamp was purportedly given by financier J.P. Morgan to his chef, Henri Charpentier, when Charpentier opened his first restaurant at Lynbrook, Long Island, New York. An accompanying letter from Mary Kathering Kalk, who was Charpentier's secretary and friend, states that this lamp (which she believed to be a Tiffany) was part of Mr. Morgan's personal collection and was presented to Charpentier in 1906. A Charpentier cookbook, Food and Finess, comes with the lot; it acknowledges Miss Kalk's help with the book. Also present is a catalogue from the 1975 Sotheby Parke Bernet auction in which this lamp was sold earlier. A lovely lamp with a great association!
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
