Handel Cattail Lamp - Very Rare and Desirable. The caramel slag glass is painted with green and reddish brown cattails and there is metal overlay in the cattail pattern. The shade is signed in the ring and inside with a Handel metal tag. Original glass and patina to the shade, which is 18" in diameter and detachable.

The lamp is 24" high; the base has original patina, sockets, acorn pulls, heat cap and finial. This base is one of the few bases not signed by Handel but guaranteed to be Handel. Base is a vase form with three handles at its side with a round, footed bottom. Rewired for safety. Weight of lamp is approximately 18 pounds.

Philip Handel was best known for the art glass lamps that he produced in Meriden, Connecticut at the turn of the century. In Robert DeFalco's book Metal Overlays by Handel, he states, "Handel conceived and produced lamps with the idea that the fixture itself was sculpture and its luminescence fine art. In the true Arts and Crafts spirit, Handel captured the essence of handcrafted quality and realized the vision of the artist in every lamp."
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.
