State of South Carolina $500 Stock Certificate, dated 1869. Printed by the American Bank Note Co., New York, certificate numbered 38, in green and black colors. Issued under the aegis of the United States of America for conversion of State securities (war reparations?). Aside from the usual art vignettes, including a good portrait of George Washington, the certificate also notable for the scene of a negro picking cotton. Document in extremely fine condition. Size: 8-1/4" x 17". Framed.
