Talleyrant, Charles-Maurice de (1754-1838) French statesman who stayed close to power through numerous regimes, from the French Revolution through the Revolution of 1830; he is remembered in American history for the infamous "XYZ Affair." Partly-printed Document Signed "Ch-Mau. Talleyrand" as Minister of Foreign Affairs, on letterhead of the Ministry of the Navy with a very attractive naval vignette and a watermark showing a sword and olive branch with a Liberty Cap (Phrygian Bonnet) surmounted on the sword, 1 p, 9x7", with integral leaf, Paris, 16 germinal, year 7 (5 April 1799). Fine. To Citizeness Marie Buscaillon asking her to furnish additional proof of her loyalty. In part: "I inform you, Citizeness, that your certificate of non-inclusion on the lists of the Émigrés [royalist refugees] has come to my attention …you will definitely be placed on the list of citizens who remained loyal to the Homeland…."
