Philip II (1527-98) King of Spain; he inherited vast possessions in the New World and Europe from his father, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He is remembered for the development of the Inquisition, and for the loss of Spainish naval supremacy after his Armada was defeated by the English under Elizabeth I (1588). Document Signed, "Yo El Rey" (I The King), 1p, 11½x8½", 1 July 1559. Fine; light toning; wafer seal on verso is perfectly preserved. Philip writes to the Duke of Sessa, Governor of Milan and Capitain General, recommending the employment of Alessandro de Tassis.
