Lot 1285

Remarkably Large Terra Cotta of a Goddess or Votive. Phoenicia, c. late 4th-2nd century BC. Image of a young woman with neat features, standing on a high base, with hands held up. She wears pleated chiton and veil over her long hair. Perhaps Kathirat, goddesses of marriage and pregnancy, since the figure has a bit of a "tummy," suggesting that condition. Also of note, the little well at the base, to receive offerings. Piece repaired above the knees, and with scattered marine encrustations. Some losses to the fingers, but these are ancient and have smoothed due to sea wear. Also, visible traces of pink coloring about the head. Height: 22". Very Rare in this size and quality!
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
A very comparable terra cotta of this size, but of a male, and well perhaps contemporary to our goddess, was seen at H.J. Berk sale no. 151, lot 568. It too a sea retrieval, and restored, was priced at $8,500.
