Lot 977

1807 Draped Bust Cent. "Comet" variety. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty steel and light olive brown with traces of faded mint red remaining in protected areas of the reverse. The surfaces are a bit dull due to a thin layer of natural oxidation, but the underlying frosty luster is evident, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a small dig or planchet flaw in the field close to the curl under the hair ribbon and a tiny planchet chip on the rim left of the lowest curl. MDS, Breen die state V early. The "Comet" flaw in the field behind the head is clear and partially raised, and several of the other parallel die flaws have also formed on the obverse. A very sharp and attractive example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Tied for third finest known in the PCGS census and at the lower end of the EAC census as AU58. Pop 2; 2 finer in 64. (PCGS # 1531) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 35,000.
