Lot 4762

1869, $5 United States Note. . Fr-64. . KL-194. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65. Exceptional Paper Quality is noted in bold lettering on the back of the PMG grading tag, and the vividness of this piece easily justifies the expression of quality. A Jackson Five with Pioneer or Woodchopper vignett at the center, its front has a variety of colors which show nicely in the photographs. The back, more standard in design, has green ink with the usual Legal Tender obligation split between two ovals left and right of the large numeral 5. These notes, because they were not backed by gold or silver, were not legal tender for duties on imports or payment of interest on the public debt in an era of hard-money.

The head is of Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States, 1829-1833, from a printing by Thomas Sully, engraved by Alfred Sealey. The pioneer family was engraved by Henry Gugler.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
