Lot 3477

Valentinian III, 425-455 AD. Gold Solidus (4.27 g.), uncertain Western Mint, c. 425-435 AD. Extremely Rare, Unique? While this reverse type is unlisted in RIC, nevertheless the style compares well with those of normal Imperial issues struck in the western portion of the Empire. That this might be a Gallic imitation, the likelihood seems small -- the consular issues are not a normal type seen in the barbarian imitations. Bust of Valentinian III left, wearing pearl diadem and consular robes, holding mappa and cross-tipped scepter; DN PLA VALENTI - NIANVS P - F AVG. Reverse: Two nimbate emperors of equal size stand facing in consular robes, holding mappa and globus cruciger; VICTO - RIA - AVGGG, COMOB in exergue. RIC --. Sharply struck, the obverse die showing several cuds about the periphery. Flan a little wavy in spots. Brown toning in the recesses. A nice Very Fine plus.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized $2,990
