Lot 2175

1915 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Premium quality for the grade. Pratt's Native American chieftain model remains unnamed, his tribe unknown. This was simultaneously an "impression emblematic of Liberty" as the Mint Act of 1792 specifies (for after all the Indians were free peoples until white men's laws made them third-class citizens), a compliment to Theodore Roosevelt, and a continuation of a trend begun in 1899 with G. F. C. Smillie's magnificent portrait of Sioux chief Ta-to-ka-inyanka ('Running Antelope') on the $5 silver certificate (PCGS # 8530) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.
The Greenhill Collection.

Realized $2,070
