1885 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. This gleaming fresh 1885 Liberty half eagle, an "ultra" cameo frosted beauty, takes its place in the short line up of surviving choice Proof gold coins in the present century. The devices are very bold and are, for that matter, ultra frosty -- and that's a comfort -- accenting the portrait, eagle, and other features against a field of "orange peel" mirror beauty. The textured mirror surface is characteristic of gold of this period, but for some reason not seen as prevalent on the copper or silver Proofs. One or two faint hairlines do not disturb the atmosphere of serene beauty and joy this coin produces on the first-hand viewer. It is every bit a gorgeous specimen.
Only 66 Proofs were reported struck in 1885, probably fewer than half this number exist today. That being the case, only a handful could possibly hold a candle to this lovely Proof 64 with its ultra cameo-jewel devices. NGC #1500894-010. Only 66 proofs minted. Pop 1; 4 finer; 3 in 66; 1 in 67.
