Lot 2038

1874-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Untoned. Scarce "CC" date. A couple of small marks on the jaw. A very-fresh beauty and one of only a small population at the high end of the grading scale. Level, smooth surfaces occur on both sides, with luster around the devices and well into the fields, very faint traces of pale orange gold mingle on the clean (but definitely not "cleaned") surfaces. "Clean" as in mark-free. Nicely struck, too, and unlike those which have the more than a touch of weakness at the centers, particularly on the eagle, and so annoying to the perfectionist, this exemplary coin is bold. The photos show this feature well, but first-hand experience using a magnifying glass is best. For it is here that this 1874-CC's beauty and superiority really shines! Only 21,198 minted. Pop 12; 12 finer in 58.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
