Lot 1843

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Nicely toned. Dancing satin to frosted luster careens off the choice surfaces of this attractively preserved Indian quarter eagle. A blend of shades can be seen on both sides. The strike is everywhere sharp on the reverse, with the design elements also nicely formed on the Indian's war bonnet and ruffled feather band.

When 21st Century collectors introduce the subject of the 1911-D quarter eagle into the discussion, what usually gets focused on is this coin's impressively low mintage (55,850 pieces), followed closely by talk about its absolute rarity. What is never overlooked, however, is its condition rarity in choice Mint condition, beyond the obvious fact that the higher the Mint State rating the more difficult it becomes to find one. As a choice MS64, acquisition of a 1911-D not only requires a substantial outlay, but a great deal of patience as well. Pop 267; 18 finer; 14 in 65; 4 in 66. (PCGS # 7943) .
Estimated Value $28,000 - 30,000.
