Lot 1841

1910 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 65. Purportedly 682 made; many believe this figure is a typographical error, as Proofs of this date are no less rare than those of 1909. Collector interest in these was never very high due to their initial cost (a not inconsiderable sum in those days), and as a result, very few are to be found in gem condition. Hence, this is clearly among of an exclusive group which is among the handsomest known of the date, regardless of its exact numerical grade. No signs of handling marks and the surfaces are quite well preserved. The only faint disturbance would be a couple of nearly invisible hairlines, mostly in out of the way locations. Hard searching may find a duplicate Proof 65, but expect to find a better one and you'll be out there in the bourse floor 24 hours a day for weeks on end, as this is a really beautiful, charming coin. Perfectly struck; a visual masterpiece of Bella Lyon Pratt's "recessed relief" design as it is officially termed by the Mint. Pop 26; 41 finer.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

Realized $25,875
