1863 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Beautiful golden toning. Reflective golden fields and frosted motifs display rich orange colored iridescence. A clear, mirror field throughout helps to establish the Gem quality attributes of this specimen. This particular date in Proof is one of the great prizes to the gold dollar specialist. Indeed it is probably the key date among Proof gold dollars. While Mint records show a 50 Proofs of the date, we feel that fewer than that number may have been sold to. Indeed, perhaps 30 is more likely number released from the Mint. Apart from this, we know that just a dozen or perhaps a few more Proof examples are traced. Circulation strikes of the date because they are extremely rare, increase the popularity of the Proofs. Meanwhile, in referring to the Proofs, we suspect that the present specimen will see a lively round of bidding before it finally lands in a new owner's advanced collection. Indeed, this cameo gem is among only three Proof 65 Cameos seen by NGC. Pop 3; 3 in 66 Cameo; 1 in 67 Cameo.
