Lot 1554

1896 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo Star. An example whose rich frosty white luster on the head of Liberty and eagle's body pulsates with an inner energy like atomic fission. Struck with mathematical precision by the dies, the rims are square and bold, the stars, date, and legends have squared-off edges found on Proofs. The word "fresh" as Americans know it, refers to plump fruit or the gloss of paint on a new Mercedes; but here we use it to identify the gloss or glow of silvery originality on what can only be described as "fresh from the dies" quality. Watch the activity on this coin. NGC #1827382-002. Only 762 proofs minted. Pop 1; 2 finer in 69 Star.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.
The Greenhill Collection.

Realized $8,165
