1906, $20 Gold Certificate. . Fr-1184. . KL-561. Light folds but residual crispness remains in the still fresh looking paper of this handsome note. Gold certificates were backed by gold coins held at the Treasury and in the sub-Treasury depositories. They were issued beginning in 1878 and continued to the time of Franklin Roosevelt's enactment of a proclamation seizing all the gold owned by the public (or seizable therefrom). Most of the large size bills such as this 1906 series note were returned to the Treasury and later destroyed. PMG Extremely Fine 40.
