Lot 4171

1855/4 Dollar Octagonal. Liberty Head. . BG-511. High Rarity 4. PCGS graded MS-60. Lightly toned, with the thin gold wash partially showing through as pinkish low-fineness copper-gold. Uneven toning; typical crude portrait and stars. A desirable overdate issue which has 10 larger five-pointed stars and from the same Frontier & Deviercy reverse (reground from BG-510) where the date has been changed to 1855 through heavy repunching. Always a scarce denomination and a desirable Period One issue. (Most Period Two coins were sold as souvenirs to tourists and collectors, while the Period One coins mainly were used in commerce, explaining the lower population of choice Mint States.) Pop 4; 35 finer. (PCGS # 10488) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.
