Lot 3780

1878 $3 Gold. NGC graded MS-65. One small mark on the cheek. Gorgeous surfaces, swirling luster, and over the top color that swings from apricot-gold to brighter reddish gold across the fields and devices. A solid Gem at this level! Pop 134; 65 finer.

Two events of note in 1878: the inventor chap, Thomas Alva Edison, took out a patent on the phonograph. Also this year, a new vehicle, called "Wheels," appeared in the streets of America. It consisted of a large wheel in front and a small wheel in back, and had a connecting bar and pad upon which the rider could seat himself while he pedaled precariously forward. This was the forerunner of the modern bicycle.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 24,000.
Frank McCarthy Collection.

Realized $19,550
