1883 Hawaiian Dollar. NGC graded Proof 61 Medcalf 2CS-5. Mostly untoned with minor hairlines and a small contact mark below K of KALAKAUA. A marvelous rarity and collected right along with regular issue U.S. coins since Hawaii later became a Territory (i.e., a colony) of the United States in 1904. The 1883 Kingdom coinage was designed by Charles E. Barber of the Philadelphia Mint where these Proofs were struck. There are two distinctive engraving styles, the fine detail work of the half, quarter and dime with very sharp curl detail of hair and beard as compared to the dollar. The coins regular-issue coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint for Spreckels, an agent for the counterparties. Only 26 Proofs of the dollar denomination were made in silver.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 9,000.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.
