Lot 279

1879 Morgan Dollar. AU-55. Partial collar strike, and a rare Error Silver Dollar for the collector. The edge of this coin will have the unusual shape of two distinct diameters. If viewed edgewise it will appear to be very much like the conventional shape of a railroad wheel with its flange which permits it to remain on the rails of a railroad. In fact, the partial collar strike error coin is often called a Railroad Wheel error coin or a Flanged Edge error coin. Variations of these terms which try to be more descriptive have come down through the years.

The partial collar error coin usually may be found in two distinct types. The types depend upon the way that the collar is jammed onto the lower die shaft. If that jam was virtually even all around and the collar is level, as seen on this 1879 silver dollar, the resulting coin will have an even or level partial collar edge. On the other hand, if the collar was jammed in a tilted manner, the resulting partial collar error coin will have a tilted or uneven pattern to the two-diameter edge. Both types are equally collectible and often assembled into sets by Type.
Estimated Value $100 - 200.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.
