1842-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Small date. PCGS graded AU-55. A hint of light grey toning.Very Rare. A well-known rarity among New Orleans Mint Seated Quarters, the Small Date variety has an original mintage that probably comprised only a very small percentage of the 1842-O's 769,000-piece delivery. Examples are rare in all grades (Briggs even assigns G/VG examples a Rarity-5 rating!), and they are especially so at or above AU. Approximately 10% of extant '42-O Small Date Quarters were struck after the reverse die suffered extensive damage in the Mint. This damage resulted in obscured definition in the centers on both sides of all coins subsequently struck from this die marriage. Fortunately for our bidders, this coin was delivered prior to this damage, and it is an exceptionally attractive example in all regards.
Easily among the most appealing '42-O Small Date Quarters that we have ever handled, this coin is sharply struck with only light wear across the highpoints. The overall appearance is one of even, attractive, silver-gray color, and ample remnants of original luster shine forth from the more protected areas around the devices. There are no obvious abrasions, and the eye appeal is stronger than that sometimes seen on BU Seated Quarters from this coinage facility. PCGS series #21939817. Pop 2; 1 in 58; 1 in 61.
