Lot 1672

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-62 Valentine-6, LM-9. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides. While Mint State examples are occasionally available through the near-Gem level, they are always quickly snapped up by eager Type set collectors, all are surprisingly elusive. This is a frosty if somewhat die clashed example, beautifully patinated and a survivor that is indicative of an even higher grade.

On Valentine-6, the reverse has a single berry inside the wreath below the left wing, and this lone characteristic is the only attribution requirement. Obverse is cracked through the right arm of Y to the nose, face, and neck, continuing to the top of the digit 7 and the rim. Secondary obverse cracks are also present. Pop 27; 79 finer. (PCGS # 4251) .

All 1794-1805 half dimes have vertically reeded edges imparted by the Castaing machine before devices were stamped; close collars for reeding edges did not come into use until 1828-29.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.
