1873 Nickel Three Cents. Closed 3. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Spot-free gem. Totally white. Lustrous, mint-sparkling Proof surfaces put on a show with their gleaming originality and nickel-bright iridescence, the overall appearance greatly reinforced by cartwheel luster. Regarding this date, mintage was very low in the early years of the series. This is why the dates most often seen in auctions are those made from 1878 to 1889, when production increased. Only 1,100 Proofs were struck in 1873, about half to one-third the number of later issues. Pop 22; 1 in 65 Star; 15 in 66.
