Important 18th Century British Silver Figural Plaque. A very large and impressive repoussé silver decorative plaque, gross weight 29½ oz., 15 1/2 inches in diameter in neo-Gothic style, depicting two armoured knights of antiquity holding spears and assisting an injured comrade between them. Behind and to the side of this trio, a scene of a castle wall and mountain, surrounded by a border of floral motifs. On the reverse a series of four hallmarks; "I.S", lion walking left, crowned lion head and the letter "h" for 1783, among these the marks of the very skilled artist John Scofield, English silversmith, active 1776 to 1796. This showpiece has been carefully tended for over two centuries, polished to preserve the surfaces and with only a few minor taps and tiny bends at the edges.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
