McClellan, George B. War-date Autograph Letter Signed "Geo.B. McClellan / Maj. Genl. USA," 1 p, 9½x6", New York, 10 April 1863. To Dr. Thomas Ellis, an English physician who volunteered his services to the Union army and was a great admirer of McClellan. In part: "I…am glad to hear that you are about to publish the result of your observations during the recent campaigns of the Army of the Potomac….[and] for the compliment you pay me in desiring to dedicate your work to me…." Lincoln, however, was not so admiring of McClellan; he ordered Burnside to take command of the Army of the Potomac as of Nov. 7, 1862.
