Guillotin, Joseph (1738-1814) French doctor who proposed the use of a mechanical device as a means of painless capital punishment; the guillotine was widely used during the French Revolution. Document Signed "Guillotin" as secretary to the National Assembly, on laid, watermarked paper, 1 p., 12½x8", Paris, 23 Feb. 1791. Fine. Concerning the employment, performance of duties and payment of several inspectors and their subordinates. Also signed by Lepeletier de SAINT-FARGEAU, who voted for Louis XVI's execution and was himself assassinated by royalists in 1793 (David did a deathbed portrait of him); the Duke d'AIGUILLON, Judge Jean-Marie LAPOULE, and the Marquis de SEIGNELAY (Bishop of Rodez), all members of the National Assembly.
