Freud, Sigmund (1856-1839) Austrian neurologist who developed psychoanalysis to treat psychological and emotional disorders. Autograph Letter Signed "Sigm. Freud," 1½ pp (1 sheet, both sides), in German, London, 11 Mar. 1939. Fine; one tiny spot. Written 6½ months before his death to "most esteemed Doctor" (Dr. Adolf Sindler), stating his interest in an undertaking the doctor reported on and expressing his willingness to be available for a conference. He adds, "It just so happens, however, that I am in pain and I'm not even the master of my time, since I have started upon a course of X-Ray treatments that is both demanding and tiring. Therefore I dare not give you a time for your kind visit…." On June 4, 1938, Freud and his family fled Austria to escape the German Anschluss. They lived in London until Freud's death by a physician-assisted morphine overdose on September 23, 1939. He had contracted cancer of the mouth from his habit of smoking a box of cigars daily. After having his jaw removed and undergoing some 30 operations, he could no longer take the pain. With translation.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.
