1859 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice strike with even toning on both sides. Pop 15; 9 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5448) .

The most newsworthy event of 1859 took place on the 16th of October that year when John Brown lead an armed group of 21 men to seize the arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery. He was captured, tried, and executed.

This was not Brown's first run-in with the law. Three years before, on Pottawotamie Creek, on the night of May 24, 1856, Brown and his sons murdered five men who supported slavery, although none actually owned slaves. Brown and his sons escaped. Brown spent the next three years seeking contributions from wealthy abolitionists in order to establish a colony for runaway slaves. To accomplish this, Brown needed weapons and decided to capture the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The rest is history.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,700.
