Lot 369

1861 $2.50 Liberty. Type 2. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned. An attractive, if minimally Uncirculated example of this Civil War issue. Pop 60.

The Old Reverse hub of the Liberty Quarter Eagle, sometimes called the First Reverse, was introduced along with the type in 1840. This hub is identifiable by the close proximity of the lowest arrowhead to the CA in AMERICA and the closed talons on the eagle. Although replaced by a new reverse hub in 1859, the Old Reverse hub continued in use, albeit in a limited fashion, through 1861. The first Old Reverse Quarter Eagles were not discovered until the 1960s. Today, this variety is well respected as a significant rarity in all grades.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.
