Lot 316

1920 Maine Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Old holder. Nice original toning on both sides. Keen-edged devices throughout, including the tree at the center of the coat of arms which on some strikes is weakly impressed.

The state of Maine celebrated its centenary anniversary in Portland, the state capital. Representative John A. Peters submitted a sketch of the coin and Anthony de Francisci (Peace Dollar designer) made the original models from the sketch. Either George T. Morgan or John R. Sinnock completed the dies from the Peters/de Francisci design. For the obverse, Peters used the state seal, with a tight pine wreath on the reverse, Maine being the "Pine Tree State." Of 50,000 struck, a number were released into circulation as unsold, accounting for those seen in Very Fine and Extremely Fine condition.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.

Realized $322
