Lot 306

1892 Columbian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Beautifully toned on each side. Intensely lustrous surfaces throughout. The surfaces display attractive toning. A piece of special beauty (PCGS # 9296) .

When the plaster model for the reverse of the Columbian half dollar arrived, chief engraver Charles Barber labeled it as "uncoinable," but he evidently turned it over to George T. Morgan for copying. The artist who drew the design must have used the Spanish reproduction of the Santa Maria for copying but Morgan improved on this by using a photograph of the ship -- while preserving the same "ship on wheels" layout, with the divided date of 1492, and the stars flanking date 1892.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.

Realized $167
