Lot 2044

Roman Empire. Caligula, 37-41 AD. AE Sestertius, Rome, struck 37-38 AD. Laureate head left. Reverse: Oak wreath; S.P.Q.R. / P.P / OB. CIVES / SERVATOS within, in four lines. RIC 37; BMCRE 38; C. 4. The slightest of smoothing in a few spots on the obverse field, otherwise the coin appears to have been left as is. With pleasing variegated green and deep brown patina. Perfect centering and strike, with fine high relief portrait (causing crazing to the plastic capsule). An excellent, bold and natural-looking example, compared to many of the over cleaned coins on the market these days. The grading by ICG unusually conservative on this one. ICG graded VF-25.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,950.

Realized $1,500
