Lot 1851

1889-CC. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck and a nice white example of this key date "CC" dollar. To the loyal Morgan Dollar fan, the 1889-CC is a sought-after issue in any grade and a rarity of celebrated proportions at the Choice Uncirculated level, being out of reach to most buyers even in average Mint State grades. The remarkable MS63 we now offer shares little with the typical bagmarked or worn survivor. Not only are the untoned surfaces free of problems, but the fields are actually satiny in appearance. Further inspection reveals central devices that are also clean and decently struck with the near-perfect execution that is, fortunately, seen on much of the issue. Only a few trivial blemishes can be found in the fields. An appealing specimen of the key CC-mint date. Pop 45; 36 in 64; 4 in 65; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7190) .

Silver Dollar coinage recommenced in 1889 at the Carson City office after a three-year recess. Evidently a few irregularities had popped up which caused the Treasury Department to close the Mint while an investigation was made. Upon reopening, there was only time enough to strike 350,000 Silver Dollars before the new calendar year began. Hence, this date's infrequent appearance at auction, especially in higher grade.
Estimated Value $27,000 - 29,000.

Realized $32,200
