Lot 1588

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Nice light toning with areas represented by natural old-gray and some russet brown shades. Attractive surfaces with choice rims (there being only a couple of very tiny rim bumps noted). Due to the high relief of this design, some curls on the top part of Liberty's head are not separated as well as others below the region of the ear. When the Mint introduced the new flowing hair dollar the equipment used to strike these required more press power than was available to really bring up all the finer details of these dies. Late in 1795 the designs of the coins were modified, not because of the striking issues, but because some critics objected to the flowing hair design of Liberty.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Realized $10,925
