Lot 1317

1876-S $20 Liberty. SEGS graded Type 2 MS-64. A well struck example and quite choice. No serious marks or scratches, just some faint hairlines from light cleaning. This year marks the last in which the Liberty $20 was produced with the reverse denomination spelled TWENTY D. The San Francisco mint's delivery of 1876 is one of the more readily obtainable issues in the Type II Double Eagle series, but it is rarer at or above the Mint State level than many would suppose. All 1876-S Twenties that are extant in Mint State 64 are solidly within the Condition Census for the issue, and they are currently unsurpassed in beauty or desirability.

An exceptionally well-preserved example of both the type and the issue, as mentioned, this fresh Mint State 64 example is sharply struck from the dies. Luster is full, pulsating, and displays a satin-to-softly frosted texture that flickers from rim-to-rim. The color is a key element, and mostly pale-gold in shade and quite enjoyable to gaze upon.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.
