Lot 1312

1872-CC $20 Liberty. SEGS graded AU-58. Cleaned. Signs of old polishing on the reverse. Our grade is AU53.

In a period in which very few Mint State coins are known (this being true of the 1872-CC eagle as well) the collector is offered a high-end AU example which we have net-graded as AU-53, actually a choice coin at this level since few have been classified at better.

The mintage of the 1872-CC $20 amounted to just 26,900 pieces. Most depositors in those far off days preferred the easier-to-count $20 denomination but chose to send their gold across the mountain range to San Francisco, instead, for the better smelting fees than Carson City Mint could offer. Of that figure, we estimate the vast majority no longer exist, with the typically encountered specimen apt to grade an ugly Very Fine. The early coins of the Carson City Mint, especially those of 1870 through 1872 in all denominations and the smaller denominations for a time after that, seem to have been roughly handled in circulation. In addition, these pieces wore rapidly, and over a period of time most were melted or otherwise disappeared. Very few were ever exported.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,500.
