Lamp with Boar Hunt Scene. Roman Empire, perhaps North Africa, 2nd century AD. Round bodied lamp, with heart-shaped spout, fin handle, and red-orange slip. Discus: a man, nude but for cloak, spears a large boar at right; broad patterned border around. Maker's mark: spoked wheel. Intact and showing wear, but discus detail sharp, with much of residual slip visible. Length: 4-3/4". Attractive motif -- perhaps a scene from the myth of the Calydonian Boar.
Estimated Value $350 - 450.
Rodney Legge Collection Rare.

The Calydonian Boar was one of the famous monsters in Greek mythology, and its hunt and demise was a popular subject in classical art. Involved in the story were many of the major Greek heroes of the time: Jason, Theseus, Telamon, Peleus, the Dioscuri, Laertes, Nestor, and the king's own son, Meleager, plus the famed huntress, Atalanta.
